Bleeding

There was something eluding the finality of the day.
An uneasiness tugging at the back of the brain
It kept me searching for answers
In places where answers had already fled.

Maybe there aren’t any answers
I could stop the questions
And free myself

A hawk flew by
His mate crying out
Completing rituals of eternity

I pointed my camera
To the distant ridge
And it made a story
Of the everyday

Night’s love affair with day
When for a brief moment
They could bleed together
As one

2019 -Was Eclectic

It’s always an interesting exercise to review the work from the previous year. It’s sort of a snapshot of the previous 12 months and reveals how much effort was put into the craft.
As expected, my photographic output was “less than usual”. That happens when artistic efforts are divided among other mediums.
Still, 2019 was a year dedicated to returning to older habits that have suffered over the last four years. Most specifically, just getting out there to make photographs.

Here are some one-second snippets from last year:

Focus

Driven by hunger
Her pups hidden away
Out of sight

I followed her at a distance
Thinking I was being respectful

But she didn’t care
Joggers and walkers
Came within her comfort zone
But she didn’t care

Driven by hunger
She hunted
With relentless determination

An ear would perk
Turning her body
A slow approach
Zeroing in
Crouching
Leaping
Killing
Eating
Repeat

Focused

And I Thought

There comes a time
To question shadows
And thank the darkness.

How else will we appreciate
The light of day?

Revelations
Are sweet and liberating.
Releasing ourselves
From our own ignorance.
They are self-critical
And beloved
For they make us whole.

I have concluded
That perfect expectation is appropriate
For know-it-alls
And for the lazy
Who are not willing to work
Too petrified to morph.

Selfishness is a poison
Its bitter jaundice
Evidenced in our masks
Stunting our growth
Imprisoning us
In cells
Of our own doing

multiple exposure photograph –
Early in my photographic walk, I learned that the darkness is a friend to imaging. These other things I learned in my youth and onward, realizing the world does not revolve around me and sometimes I have to just let go of the negative. Building a positive life does not always mean what we think it should mean or look like sometimes. Coming to terms with that will liberate the soul.
I practice Christianity, however I do not talk much about it here. That world view has fixed my perspectives. It is a place to start, and to end.
